Guys this is about the normal manger i got in my life.
Apologies:
My English could be little poor, so please forgive me in advance or write to me for any correction (vadivelu_mani@yahoo.co.in).
This is not to hurt anyone it’s full of my personal feelings :)
This could be a normal engineer’s (Even i am an engineer) feeling but what's different here? let’s go ahead and read the fortunate, which i got after 5 years of my experience. I got a very nice manager(Here i don’t want to use the word "manager" because it means the typical current industry managers but he is something different).
Ok let me start from my carrier's "pillaiyar sulii"(It’s a Tamil language word to mention the beginning or start).
Carrier kickoff : I have started my carrier with a very big company in India at that time i was so happy and very much interested to work like every fresher’s(even u) would have feel it. As usual I got a typical IT industry manager and I had to go ahead with it(no other option).
After 2-Years I got a job in another company in India (this time the only change was this is one of the biggest company in US an MNC). The same kind of manager continues in a different location I worked hard for the company and for my satisfaction the manager screwed up me in the appraisal meeting unfortunately I didn’t fight/bargain for anything and he used it correctly to screw up me. No worries!!! I understood one thing which is “you need to bargain to get your benefits for the good work which you did” but even then I didn’t tune my mind to bargain for the same because I don’t want those things for my bargain skills instead of my work.
The cool thing here I learnt is that the typical Indian companies(i don’t have any idea about abroad companies) runs like this, when you dig little inside, all these things were driven by the big shots/managers who is sitting on top of our(the poor engineers) heads, Even then I got a good manager(he was almost tuned to understand the engineers situation) in the same company but unfortunately his manager was twice that of a typical manager. so whenever I go to him for anything(Even with some good ideas to try to crack some major issue in the project) he understands us(the team) but finally he used to tell that “Dude I am just a manager by designation but I can’t do anything ”.
Now the question on your mind is “Why are you asking the manager to do/implement your ideas?” Even we got the same feelings and we decide to go ahead with the same. On the go it went to the manger’s (2 * typical manager) ear and he immediately called us for meeting and screwed up by saying “why are you doing without following process and etc”.
The Processes are implemented for Manager/the people who don’t know the meaning of trust.
Now how will you feel when you suddenly get a manager who hate manager concept in the industry, hate process, mainly trust people, gives full freedom to work, etc.?. I know what will be your feeling when you get this kind of manager because I experienced it. Yes, I have joined my 3rd company after spending 3-years in my 2nd company. This company is very small company running with hardly 20-30 people.
I met this guy in my 2nd round of interview which went for almost 2.5hours the longest interesting discussion I ever had in my professional life(Thanks for the wonderful 2.5hours Hari). His dream team is built only with trust and believe.
There are many unique things he has, obviously all are normal manager’s characters which most of the managers doesn't have.
He and his team's golden rules which motivated me to join this small "Dream Team" may be small in size but we always challenge big in the world.
1. No Manager concept :)
(Which definitely will attract all the engineers? Of course if there is no manager then we will work 10 times better than our normal work because we no need to give every hour status to him to complete his action item). This one attracted me a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. All people in this “dream team” are professionals so we don’t want a manager to explain what we need to do.....
2. No Process!!!!!!!.
Now the question is how a company will run without a process?. A company can run even well when you have knowledge, people and importantly driven by trust. He has lot of trust on us, so even if some thing is not possible the trust makes it possible and we are delivering our best. I believe i can’t work better then what i am doing in this team.
3. No status update for every hour or minute!!!!
4. We all will be more serious only when we play (Mainly TT)/making fun.
To Hari : I believe you will read this one or the other day. Thanks for the wonderful 2.5hours interview session Hari. That discussion will be one of the wonderful moments in my life Hari.
I am really proud to be in this "Dream team" Hari.
